Sacred Mathematics !

Astrology, we said in our earlier post, was the science of numbers in space and time. Geometry was number in space and Music the number in time.

The Universe is based on mathematical Law.

Galileo said

“Philosophy is written in this grand book --
I mean the universe --
Which stands continually open to our gaze.
But it cannot be understood
Unless one first learns to comprehend the language
And interpret the characters in which it is written.
It is written in the language of mathematics,
And its characters are triangles, circles, and other geometric figures,
Without which it is humanly impossible to understand a single word of it.”

-- Galileo Galilei, Il Saggiatore (1623)

The Celestial Triangle is the triangle formed by Aswini, Magha and Moola, at 0 degrees, 120 degrees adn 240 degrees ( Trikonas ). Celestial Rectangles are called Kendras and it is represented in Astrology as 0, 90, 180 & 270 degrees. A conjunction is 0 degrees and Opposition 180 degrees.

We are happy to note that Astrology is emerging as one of the most important sciences in the Age of Aquarius. If the Piscean Age represented Faith, the New Aquarian Age represents Gnosis, Knowledge or Philosophia Prima . Knowledge alone can make you free !

Sixfold Analysis

My last posts were translations of certain Sanskrit verses, which I felt, was not translated before. You will have to pardon my diagression.

My astro site, www.eastrovedica.com, is doing well, with the site receiving more than 340 K hits. It has also gone up in Alexa rating and in the number of unique visitors.

We have been successful with the Sixfold Analysis, wherein a planet is declared weak or strong, on the basis of Shastiamsas or points got in Shadbala or the Sixfold Analysis

V I B A L A Planets in the Sixfold Strength

Knowest thou not that planets called Vibala
Are planets weak in the Sixfold Strength?
Cancellation Bhanga they cause of Raja Yoga
And are harmful in their nature; Learned One!

Know that Weak Planets cause Raja Yoga Bhanga
Exalted with other strengths is Sampoorna called;
Devoid of other strengths is Poorna; of medium strength
Below its average strength in Sixfold is Riktha; weak

Use these terms for correct prognostication O Noble One!

Twelve Arts & the Seven Liberal Arts in Indian & Western Learning

Western Philosophy speaks of the Seven Liberal Arts, made up of the Trivium of Logic, Rhetoric & Grammar and the Quadrivium of Arithmetic, Geometry, Music & Astronomy
Indian Philosophy speaks of the Twelve Arts, namely the Six Main Arts, the Shad Dharsana of Indian Philosophy , Yoga, Vedanta, Nyaya, Vaisesika, Sankhya and Poorva Mimamsa & the Six Minor Arts - Astrology, Kalpa, Definition ( Nirukta ), Phonetics ( Shiksha ), Grammar & Poetic Metres ( Chandas ).
We find in a comparitive study that these arts are more or less the same. When Western Learning says Astronomy, the Indians by Jyothisha meant both Astronomy & Astrology, as to them both were synonyms. Mathematical Astrology is based on the formulae of Astronomy. The calculation of the MC, for instance , is Tan K = Tan R / cos w, which is a formula of Astronomy. By Jyothisha they meant Indian Astro Physics, which includes Maths also ! So Arithmetic and Geometry of Western Learning is incorporated in Jyothisha
Logic is the same as Nyaya Shastra. Gautama was the sage who founded Nyaya. He defined Nyaya as a system to refute Non Vedic arguments and install vedic arguments. Nyaya, he said, is that which illumines all learning, the instrument of all actions, the refuge of all moral ethics & analysed completely for the purpose of learning !
Pradeepa Sarva Vidyanam
Upadhi Sarva Karmanam
Ashraya sarva dharmanam
Vidhyodhese pareekshithah
Music or Gandharva Veda was one of the 18 sciences which constitute Indian Philosophy. So we find that there are parallels in the Western and the Eastern Invisible Colleges !

The concept of Kalapurusha, Time Eternal

Astrology was taught to students as a story. Once upon a time, there was a King (Sun ). He had a Queen( Moon ) . With a son ( Mercury ) and a Defence Minister (Mars). Two ministers they had ( Venus & Jupiter, in the Government of the Almighty ) They had a messenger ( Saturn ) !
This is a poetic verse in Hora Sastra. He who lies coiled as the 360 degree Belt of the Heavens, the Zodiac, is the Absolute Self as Time Eternal, the Zodiacal Man, the Kalapurusha ! The Nine Revolving Heavens represent major qualities. Even His libido is represented by Venus, the fair planet that hearteneth to Love !
The Sun represents the Soul of the Cosmic Man
The Moon His Mind
Mars His physical Strength
Mercury represents the Power of His Word
Jove happiness, learning and Wisdom
Venus represents his libido
& Saturn His Sorrow
The Sun the King & Moon the Queen
Defence Minister is mighty Mars
Mercury the Prince knowledeable
The Wise Ministers Venus & Jove
And Saturn, he who gives messages !

The only Visible Science, Astrology !

There are sciences main Six

In Indian Philosophy divine

Yoga, Sankhya, Vedanta,

Nyaya, Vaisheshika, Poorma

Mimamsas or world views called

Six auxiliary sciences there are

Astrology, Kalpa, Definition

Phonetics, Grammar & Iambics

These are the sciences Twelve !

These are sciences philosophic

Origins of the Mind Intuitive

The Seers fused Reason with Intuition

And divined the subatomic levels !

All sciences philosophic have disappeared
Controversial most of them are
Astrology is the visible Science

( As you can see planets with telescope )
With Sun & Moon as witnesses celestial !

This is a translation of a poetic verse in Prasna Anushtana Paddhathi. The Seers, after divining the subtle states of Energy and Matter, presented them in poetic verses. Poetry is divine, it is the centre and circumference of all learning !

Varaha Mihira, father of Asian Astronomy & Astrology

Varaha Mihira, was the father of Asian Astronomy, astrology, arts & architecture. He was one of the most celebrated scientise who strode like a colossus on the intellectual scene, and contributed to almost all branches of arts and sciences. Thus, Encyclopedia Britannica notes, "Varāhamihira of the Gupta age was a profound scholar of all the sciences and arts, from botany to astronomy and from military science to civil engineering." (Enc.Brit., "Education, History of," vol.18, p.4, 1990 ed.) He wrote three master treatises on the three branches of Astro Physics - Astronomy, Astrology & Samhita.

His major work in Astronomy is the Pancha Siddantika ( "Five Astronomical Treatises" )
In Astrology, the Brihat Jataka
In Samhita, the Brihat Samhita

His most famous work is the treatise on the Five Astronomical Treatises. Previously five major astronomical works held absolute sway on the astronomical scene. The Soorya Siddhanta by the Seer Soorya, the Romasa Siddhanta by the Seer Romasa, the Paulasa Siddhanta by the Seer Paulasa, Vasishta Siddhanta by Vasishta, and Paitamaha Siddhanta by the Seer Pitamaha were the prevailing astronomical texts. His genius summarised the quintessence of all these five as the Five Astronmical Treatises, the Pancha Siddhantika.

The Indian Government recognised his genius and a mural painting adorns the Parliament House at Delhi. This painting includes him along with another great astronomer, Aryabhata
He was the most brilliant amongst the Nem Gems of the court of the King Vikramaditya
The Master of Ayurveda, Dhanvantari
Poets Khapana, Amarasingha , Pangu
Vetala, Bhatta, Ghatakarpara
All graced the King Vikramaditya's court !
And of course the Master Poet, Kalidasa
Varaha Mihira was the Master of Astrology
Of legendary fame and the most brilliant
Was a cut above the rest and led the rest !
Dhanvantari Kshapanamaranigha Pangur
Vetalabhatta ghatakarpara Kalidasa
Khytho Varahamihiro Nripathe Sabhayam
Ratnani Vai Vararuchir nava vikramasya
He was a servant of the Absolute Self ( Sun )
Graced was he by the boons of the Inmost Sun !
He wrote summaries about the treatises
And compiled the magnificent Hora ( Astrology ) !

Cheiro, the Master Diviner !

Count Louis Hamon, alias Cheiro, is the most famous amongt palmists. ( 1866-1936 )
He had a wide following of famous European and American clients like Mark Twain, Sarah Bernhardt, Mata Hari, Oscar Wilde, Grover Cleveland, Thomas Edison, the Prince of Wales, General Kitchener, William Gladstone, Bernard Shaw and Joseph Chamberlain.
He spoke of the Hindu race and the remarkable sciences for foretelling future, (The Bhavishya Purana) which the Hindus, have, as prophetic sciences:

“To consider the origin of this science, we must take our thoughts back to the earliest days of the world’s history, and further more to the consideration of a people the oldest of all, yet one that has survived, and who are today as characteristic and as full of individuality as they were when thousands of years ago the first records of history were written.

I allude to those children of the East, the Hindus, a people whose philosophy and wisdom are every day being more and more revived.”

“Looking back to the earliest days of the history of the known world, we find that the first linguistic records belong to the people under consideration, and date back to that far distant cycle of time known as the Aryan civilization. Beyond history we cannot go; but the monuments and cave temples of India, according to the testimony of archaeologists, all point to a time so far beyond the scant history at our disposal, that in the examination of such matters our greatest knowledge is dwarfed into infantile nothingness – our age and era are but the swaddling clothes of the child; our manhood that of the infant in the arms of the eternity of time.”

“Long before Rome or Greece or Israel was even heard of, the mountains of India point back to an age, of learning beyond, and still beyond. From the astronomical calculations that the figures in their temples represent, it has been estimated that the Hindu understood the Precession of the Equinoxes centuries before the Christian Era."

(source: Hinduism in The Space Age - By E. Vedavyas p. 233-235).

In a book called You and Your Hand by the late Count Louis Hamon, known better as Cheiro, this statement is found:

"people who in their ignorance disdain the wisdom of ancient races forget that the great past of India contained secrets of life and philosophy that following civilizations could not controvert, but were forced to accept. For instance, it has been demonstrated that the ancient Hindus understood the precession of the equinoxes and made the calculation that it [a complete cycle] took place once in every 25,870 years. The observation and mathematical precision necessary to establish such a theory has been the wonder and admiration of modern astronomers. They, with their modern knowledge and up-to-date instruments, are still quarrelling among themselves as to whether the precession, the most important feature in astronomy, takes place every 25,870 years or every 24,500 years. The majority believe that the Hindus made no mistakes, but how they arrived at such a calculation is as great a mystery as the origin of life itself."

Lunar Theory, Astronomia Vedica & Newton

In the West, the Lunar Theory, an explanation of the perturbations of the Moon based on the Law of Gravitation, is attributed to Newton. Newton was not only a star in Physics, but in Astronomy as well.

In the hoary books of Vedic Astronomy, the longitude of the Moon is computed based on the Lunar Theory. Moon's Parallactic Equation, Annual Equation, The Variaton, Evection etc are considered and 14 trignometric corrections are given to get the true sidereal longitude of Luna

Here are the calculations in Astronomia Vedica

The Perturbations of the Moon

(Ms - Mean Anomaly of the Sun; Mm - Mean Anomaly of the Moon; Ls - Mean Longitude of the Sun; Lm - Mean Longitude of the Moon; D = Lm - Ls ( Thidhi); Nm - Node of the Moon. These values are Sidereal or Nirayana )

14 Kendras are to be made and 14 trignometric corrections are to be given, according to astronomical savants. These 14 reductions are mandatory and only after these reductions can we get the true longitude of the Moon.

First Kendra
Sin ( Ms + 180 ) * 658
Second Kendra
Sin ( Lm - Ls ) * 121
Third Kendra
Sin ( 2*D - Mm ) * 4467
Fourth Kendra
Sin ( 2*D + 6 Signs ) * 2145
Fifth Kendra
Sin (( 2*D - Mm -Ms ) + 180)* 198
Sixth Kendra
Sin ( 2*D - Ms ) * 155
Seventh Kendra
Sin ( Mm- Ms + 180 ) *112
Eighth Kendra
Sin ( 2( Lm - Nm- Mm +180))* 85
Ninth Kendra
Sin ( 2*Ls - Nm ) * 81
Tenth Kendra
Sin ( Mm - Ms )* 73
Eleventh Kendra
Sin ( 2*D + Mm ) * 60
Twelfth Kendra
Sin ( 2*Mm - 2 D + 180 ) * 42
Thirteenth Kendra
Sin ( 4*D - Mm ) * 35
Fourteenth Kendra
Sin ( 4*D - 2*Mm +180)* 30

These trignometric corrections should be added to Moon's Mean Longitude if the Kendra is in the Southern Celestial Hemisphere and deducted if the Kendra is in the Northern Celestial Hemisphere and then we get the Samskrutha Chandra Madhyamam or the Cultured Mean Longitude of the Moon. Manda Kriya ( Reduction to True Anomaly ) must be done. Then Parinathi Kriya ( Reduction to Ecliptic ) should be done and what we get then is the longitude of the Moon along the Ecliptic !

Viskshepa Vrittopa Gatho VipathaThasmannayel Jyam Parinathyabhikhyam
Yugmaupada Swarnam Idam VidheyamSyath Kranti Vritteeya Ihaisha Chandra !

After the Reductions Fourteen,

Sin M to be added or minussed thereby
To the Cultured Longitude Mean;

The Node to be deducted &
Reduced to the Earth's Path ( Ecliptic );

thus shall we get as the resultant Value,

Luna's true Sidereal Longitude !

Kepler, the Astronomer

Johannes Kepler gave the Laws of Planetary Motion to the Western world.

His basic postulates are

1) The orbit of a planet is an ellipse, with the Sun as the focus of that ellipse

2) Planets move faster at perihelion and slowest at Aphelion

3) p1^2/p2^2 = a1^3 / a2^ 3, where p = period of revolution of the planet and a its semi major axis.

Aryabhata - the master astronomer

Long before Newton, Aryabhata propounded the Heliocentric Theory of Gravitation, that all planets circle the Sun due to celestial gravity !
( Sooryaha Jagata Chakshu Gurutvakarshan ).
He postulated that planets move faster at Sheegrocha ( perihelion ) & slower at Mandocha ( Aphelion ) and that they traverse in elliptical orbits. The path of a planet is an ellipse with the Sun as the focus of that ellipse. He was the first astronomer to calculate the celestial longitudes of planets ( Aryabhato Graha Ganitham ). He wrote treatises on Astronomy & Maths and his Aryabhateeya is a master treatise on these subjects.
He laid the base for Astronomia Vedica ( Vedic Astronomy ). He gave the trignometric method of calculating planetary longitudes. He called it the Threefold Longitudinal Correction. The first method is reducing longitudes to Aphelion ( Manda Kriya ), second is reducing it to Ecliptic ( Parinathi Kriya ) & the third is reducing the longitude to Perihelion ( Sheegra Kriya ). Once the mean longitude of the planet ( Graha Madhyamam ) is corrected thrice trignometrically, we get the true longitude of the planet ( Graha Sphutam ).

The Sixfold Source of Planetary Strength

SHAD BALAS OR SIXFOLD SOURCE OF PLANETARY STRENGTH

There are six types of strengths in the Sixfold
Analysis. They are :

1. Sthana Bala - Positional Strength
2. Dig Bala - Directional Strength
3. Kala Bala - Temporal Strength
4. Chesta Bala - Motional Strength
5. Naisargika Bala - Intrinsic Strength
6. Drik Bala - Aspectual Strength

Shad Bala ia indeed importnat in Astrology. The strengths
of the planets have to be evaluated and this is extemely
valuable.

If we want to analyse a House or a Bhava, we have to know the strength
of the House lord. If we want to know the House of Fortune, again
we have to know the strength of the house lord. A weak planet will
harm and a powerful planet can only do good. " Balavan Ishtam Kuruthe
Balaheeno Viparya "

Indian calculation is sexagesimal, in units of 60. Shad Balas are calculated
in Shashtiamsas,or units of 60. 60 shastiamsas make a Rupa.

Jupiter should get more than 390 shashtiamsas to be powerful. Similarly
other planets have been assigned different values. The Sixfold Analysis
developed by Zodiac indicates whether planets are powerful or not. Three
Samjnas are given to planets. Sampoorna - Strong, Poorna - Of Medium strength
and Riktha - Weak

Horary Astrology

All Horary Astrology begins with this poetic verse

Moorthithve Parikalpitha Sasabrutho Varma Punarjanmanam
Athmethmavidham Kruthuscha Yajatham Bharthamara Jyothisham
Lokanam Pralayodayasthithi Vibhuschanekada Ya Sruthau
Vacham Na Sa dathunaikakirana Trailokya Deepo Ravi

O Whose light makes Luna Shine ! O Originator of the Solar Path !
O Self of the philosophers ! O lord of the luminaries !
Thou Preserver Destroyer and Creator ! O well extolled !
O Time Eternal! give me the divine gift of articulate speech !

This is invoking the Absolute Self, whose external symbol is the Sun, who
transcends the three relative states of Consciousness, while remaining
Absolute !
