This is in line with what Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi taught, that the Absolute Brahman becomes the Cosmic Mind ( Mahat Brahma ) to spread the world and that all this is mirrored in the Universal Mind, Mayayam Bimbithasthvam !

 

Tropicalists vs Siderealists !

This fight between the Tropicalists and the Siderealists have been going on for years. There are Siderealists in the Western ( Fagan,Cheiro who developed their own Ayanamsas ) and there are tropicalists in the Eastern !

About ten years ago, in a Western list, I quoted the Vedic Astrologer, Jeff Armstrong and was labelled as " arrogant". Jeff Armstrong's article was " You are not the Sign that you think you are, the Greek blunder". I said the Greeks have blundered and Moser Sirgar II, the Moderator got hot with me and said "Kumar, do you know how arrogant you are?". Now I am far more mature and avoid Tropical vs Sidereal fights !

I did not blame the Western scholar. How will you react when somebody says  the Indian Astronomers, Brahmagupta, Bhaskara, Aryabhata, Madhava, Parameswar, Jyeshtadeva, Neelakanta etc were wrong ? Similarly he reacted. He was influenced by Hipparchus, Ptolemy, William Lilly, Kepler, Laplace etc and how else can he react to the statement  that his forefathers have blundered ?

According to the Tropicalists, the Siderealists are arrogant. And according to the Siderealists, the Tropicalists are arrogant ! (Thibeau and Whitney  said the ancient Indians did not know Astronomy or Maths ).

There is no need for such fights. Astrology can never be proved as a physical science.

There are 13 Ayanamsas and Hari's is the 13th. Cheiro's Ayanamsa takes 72 years per degree precession. Cyril Fagan established Western Sidereal Astrology.

Since Astrology is a mystical science, let us be tolerant. Paddi ji pointed out yesterday that in some cases, Hari's Ayanamsa worked. Fine. If Lahiri's works, fine. Or Raman's Or Cheiro. Or even  the Zero Ayanamsa of the Tropicalists. Astrology should work and we should come out with good results !

We will be happy when that happens !

Tropical Zodiac vs Sidereal Zodiac

Let us put an end to these arguments.

The tropicalists think they are right and the Siderealists are wrong.

Communists think they are right and Capitalists are wrong.

There is another cycle which is controversial. The Metonic Cycle, occurring in 19 years.

 

228 solar months = 235 lunar months

The seven intercalation months are Adhi Masas. Discovery attributed to Meton. fifth Century BCE.

 

It was known to the Rishies and they said " Soorya Samkrama Rahithe Mala masobhidheeyathe " !

The Three Levels of Being !

There are three levels of Being. They are

Doing    - Gross Level
Thinking - Subtle Level

Being     - Unamanifest Level

This can be illustrated by the Bubble Diagram. Like the waves of the Ocean. On the gross level, we find agitations. This is the gross level of Doing. When we go to a deeper level, there is more calmness. This is the Subtle Level of Thinking. When we go still deeper, we find the Unmanifest level, the true level of Being.

The subtlest of all subtle thoughts come from Being. The Rishies and the Yogis know how to tune to this level.

The Science of the Absolute, Geetha, identifies these Three Levels of Being and calls them

In Vedic Symbology,

Intuition is Sarama

Ila is the Mother of the Lunar Dynasty. Saraswathi is the River of Inspiration flowing from the Supramental Truth Consciousness. And Sarama is the Hound of Heaven.

Indian Astronomy prior to the Western

Against the Pingree and the Naugbauer Hypothesis, we have the Dr Raju and Dr Joseph Hypothesis.

According to Western Learning, the first book on Astronomy was the Almagest by Ptolemy. Date 2nd century CE.

There was a text prior to that, the Vedanga Jyothisha by Lagadha. Date 1150 BCE !

Dr Raju vehemently argues, in his "Cultural Foundations of Mathematics", that the Almagest was influenced by Indian sources. Dr Joseph opines that the Indian mathematicians used differential equations, at least 600 years before Newton and Liebniz, in his "Crest of the Peacock, the Non European Roots of Mathematics".

Dennis Duke, of Florida State University, says " We have only to conclude that Ptolemy did not invent the equant. " If Ptolemy did not invent the equant, as Westerners widely believe, then who did ?

"The bisected Indian equant model is pre-Ptolemaic' says he. Other Greek books, prior to Ptoemy, may have influenced Indian Astronomy,says he. Then what are those books, prior to the Almagest, which had influenced the Indian system? The answer is "unknown sources".

Remarks Duke " Indeed, since the very earliest investigation of the Indian models by Western scholars it has been presumed that the models are somehow related to a double epicycle system, with one epicycle accounting for the zodiacal anomaly, and the other accounting for the solar anomaly (retrograde motion) This perception was no doubt reinforced by the tendency of some Indian texts to associate the manda and sighra corrections with an even older Indian tradition of some sort of forceful cords of air tugging at the planet and causing it to move along a concentric deferent . Since our goal in this paper is to investigate the nature of any connection with ancient Greek planetary models, it is only important to accept that the models appear in Indian texts that clearly pre-date any possible Islamic influences, which could, at least in principle, have introduced astronomical elements that Islamic astronomers might have derived from Greek sources. Kerala Astronomy, on Argive heights divinely sang !

If the Tropicalists "tropicalise" the Vedic Zodiac ( "which is imported from the West" ), it will go the Gregorian Way. The Vedic Astro Calender will become the Gregorian Calender ( again to be rectified later ! )

We have the Pingree and Van der Werden Hypothesis, the Naugbuer Hypothesis that the multi step algorithms of Indian Astronomy approximated a Greek Planetary Model, an eccentre and epicyclical Model. We have to respect them, as at least they admitted that India has an Astronomy. Not like Thibeau or Whitney who said that the ancient Indians  had no knowledge of Astronomy or Maths, when they saw gigantic calculations like 311.04 trillion year cycles ( Maha Manvantara ) and the Cosmological Cycle (4.32 billion years ). They said these calculations are plagiarised from the Romans and the Greeks!

Dr Carl Sagan opined that while Christians were calculating in thousands, Hindus were calculating in trillions !

The Radius Vector, said Kepler, sweeps out equal areas in equal time. 

Parameswara in the 15th century and Nilakantha in the 16th talked about Vyasardha Manda Karna. Vyasa is Diameter. Vysardha is Radius and Vyasardha Mandakarna is nothing but Radius Vector.

Kepler's Second Law states that

All planets move faster at Perihelion and move slower at Aphelion. That was known to the Indian astronomers. Otherwise they wouldnt have called Aphelion, Mandoccha ( Manda - slow ) and Perihelion, Sheegrocha ( Sheeghra - fast ) !

Kerala astronomers

This is the diagram of Manda Kriya, Reduction to the Heliocentric Coordinate System, given by the equation R e Sin M, where e is eccentricity, R is the Radius of the Circle, M is the Anomaly.

The Manda Anomaly is found out by subtracting Aphelion, Mandoccha from the Mean Longitude.

Mean Longitude - Aphelion = Manda Anomaly.

R = 360/ 2 Pi or 180/Pi or 57.3*60*60 = 206265 seconds or Vikalas.

This amount thus got is added to the mean longitude if ML > 180 and deducted if ML < 180.


The Kerala astronomers predate their Western counterparts, particularly Kepler and Laplace by centuries. In his Thesis " The Model of Planetary Motion in the works of the Kerala astronomers", Prof Ramasubramaniam, Physics Professor, Madurai University observes " In conclusion, it may be noted that there is a vast literature on astronomy, including mathematics, both in Sanskrit and Malayalam produced by the Kerala School during the period 14-19th century. Only a fraction of it has been published and so far only a few studies of these texts have appeared ".

Aries

Taurus

You can improve your 13 skills and talk your way to the top, as the Transit of the Nodes is benign. Friends increase. Good will also. You become the cynosure of all eyes. There will be economic gains and gain of friends. You can use this time to Love All and Serve All, thereby increasing your Credit in the Cosmic Ledger.

While the Nodes favor Enlightenment, they can cause eye diseases . While the cash will be good, there can be trouble to uncles and aunts. So be careful.


Gemini


Be careful about romantic relationships. A rift within the lute can occur at any time. It may widen soon and make the music mute. On the positive side, economic gains can accrue. Enemies increase. So also expenditure. Financial tightness indicated.


On the negative side, there may be disagreement with life partner. But this is offset by profit from investments and speculation. Your merits may be appreciated by VIPs. Your enemies may try this time to humiliate you.


Cancer

Improving skills becomes a must and this is the time to do that. Social skills are considered very important. Friends and good will increase. Economic benefits can ensue and this is the time to store treasures in Heaven. This will accelerate your spiritual evolution and take you Godward !.

On the negative side, expenses will spiral. Dreams will scare you. On the positive side, you can get income from many sources. There may be gains from investment.

Sagittarius

This is the time to store treasures in Heaven. Nature rewards good deeds. What goes around, comes around. If you help people, people will help you. You can try TM and Holistic Medicine, which can save you from tension and health problems.

Capricorn

Aquarius


This is the time to take calculated risks. The envious rivals may attack you with vicious propaganda. Rahu can take away your mental peace and the Rahu Mantra - Om Rahave Namah - can be chanted to get the maximum benefits of the 9th Rahu Transit.

Be careful about relationship with neighbors. There will be a lack of self confidence. On the positive side, you become more spiritual. Journeys will be undertaken and you will get profit from investment and speculation.


Pisces


Money takes away mental peace. You have to store treasures in Heaven for gaining the peace that passeth understanding. Do Punya and eschew Papa, this is the essence of the millions of books on Wisdom, Ethics and Morality. Friends increase. Paropakarya Punyaya Papaya Para Peedanam.


You will find that money is a killer. Money kills many a relationship. Due to friction between the family members, lack of mental peace will result. But this transit is not without its positive side. There may be increase in largesse, social recognition, acquisition of knowledge and improvement of the communication ability.

The Ardra Festival ( Thiruvathira )

Today is Thiruvathira Festival, which occurs during the month of Dhanus.


It symbolises the union of Purusha and Prakriti, of Siva and Sakthi. It is said that Eros or Kama Deva was burnt to ashes by the Lord, t...hereby destroying the Lust that binds man to the sublunar world.


This festival is prevalent in the Nair and Namboothiri communities in Kerala.

Actually this Festival starts on the day of Aswathi.


On Rohini day, women pray for the overall welfare of the family.


On Makiryam day, mothers fast for the well being of the children.


On Aridra day, women fast for the well being of their husbands.


They wake up at 0400 AM and go to the nearest Lord Siva shrine, before Sunrise. This is called Ardra Darshan.

Special food, koova payasam or arrowroot pudding is taken in with steamed bananas. I remember my mother giving me such food during childhood

The Literature of India

Books are the legacies that a great genius leaves to mankind

Left to the posterity of those that are yet unborn. – Dante

By Vedas no books are meant. This perspective is contrary to what people think. They are eternal truths cognised by the Seers in higher states of Consciousness.


Books have great value. Reading maketh a full man, said Bacon. Writing a precise man and Conference a ready man.

There are so many books in Vedic Literature. The Rishies meant that Knowledge is the main criterion for success, Vidya Dhanam Sarva Dhanal Pradhanam. Knowledge is that which cannot be stolen, that which cannot be taxed, that which cannot be shared and that which is not burdensome. When compared to mundane wealth, Divine Wealth or Wisdom is greater ! Wisdom has her blessings unknown to Wealth.

We have heard about Dante and Goethe, but not Aurobindo or Tagore. We know Laplace and Lagrange, if not Liebniz, but not Aryabhata or Bhaskara. We know Shakespeare, but not Kalidasa ! Beethoven and Mozart we know, but not Thyagaraja.

It is our aim to disseminate quality information about the vast Indian literature and the literatuers and the poets who adorned this great ocean. Let us enjoy Kalidasa and Magha ! Let us revel in the intellectual brilliance of Aryabhata, Varaha and Bhaskara. Let us immerse ourselves in Thyagaraja. Let us be inspired by Aurobindo and Tagore !

Meanwhile I am redesigning, optimising www.eastrovedica.com ,as I feel that this site is affected by Penguin and Panda ! Unnecessary links, keywords etc are removed. I have never done keyword stuffing in my life. So my articles are free from that blemish.

Traffic is picking up at my sites on Deerfield server and the article sites are coming of age. I do not get sufficient time to work on Facebook and Youtube, because of the redesigning work.

My time has changed. Even though Jupiter in the 11th is good for career, Saturn in the 4th is not. Transit Saturn is creating obstacles and impediments, denying the much needed mental peace. Jupiter will be there in the lunar 11th and so I dont have to worry till May 31st, when He moves over to Gemini. Then there is scope for alarm and despondency, as He will be in my adverse twelfth !

North East Monsoon strikes Kerala !

Despite criticism that Thula Varsha or the North East Monsoon is far away, she is dot on time. It rained heavily in Trichur yesterday. It rained heavily in Madras the day before.

Tamil Nadu receives more rains than Kerala in this North East Monsoon phase. In Kerala rains are less this year, with the result we have unwanted power cuts. 

We hope it pours heavily again. If not Kerala is in for more power cuts.

Different Calenders

We will explain the different Calenders. Every Civilization has a Calender.

The Christian Calender is the Western which the whole world is following. Its present year, as everybody knows is 2012.

The Hindu Calender is based on the Kali Era which began on 17th Feb 3102 BCE. Therefore the present Hindu Year is 3102+2012 = 5114.

The Masonic Calender's present year is 6012. The formula is Christian C + 4000. Free Masons write AL, Anno Lucis, in the Year of Light instead of the Anno Domine ( ' in the year of our Lord " ) of the Christian. Free Masons are Christians, though most of the Free Masons are Protestant. Fundamentalist Christians do not like the Free Masons. Free Masonry, Rosicrucianism, Gnosticism have been banned as heretical sects.

The Malaylam Calender with its 12 months from Mesha to Meena is the Calender that is followed in Kerala. Its present year is 1187. If you add 825 to the Malayalam Era, you will get the English Era.

The Western underwent Modification and Pope Gregory rectified the Julian Calender into the Gregorian. The Julian took 365.25 days as one year and hence the error. The actual value of one year is 365.256362424815 days. Christopher Clavius took six decimals to solve the problem.

The Western Calender is based on the Tropical Zodiac,which is moving. Hence it may need rectifications.

The Indian is based on the Sidereal Zodiac, which is static and it needs no modification.

Saturnine Transits

Saturn is a hard Taskmaster. He can make man bear the Cross. Purgation of sins is effectuated by Saturn.

He causes Sasa Maha Yoga, one of the major yogas.  If he be powerfully
posited in angles, in his own houses or in exaltation, Sasa Yoga is caused. Sasa Yoga gives enjoyments and makes  the native blase or fed up with pleasure,
granting Vairagya or detachment to the native, which will pave the way for
Liberation. Hence the importance of Sasa Yoga in a horoscope.

He represents the principle " Without Hell, no Heaven",  " Without thorns, no roses " , " Without pain, no gain"

In the First, he brings untold sorrows ( Nana Roga shucham )

In the Second, he brings loss of happiness and wealth ( Sukhartha Vihathim )

In the Third, he brings happiness and gains  ( Sthanartha bhrityadhikam ) .

In the Fourth, he brings fall from happiness ( Sthree bandastha sukhachyuthim )

In the Fifth, fall again ( dhana sukha bhramsam )

In the Sixth, fall again ( sapatna kshayam )

In the Seventh, he makes man go away from his domicile ( Marga sakthim )

In the Eighth, he brings sorrows galore ( Analpa Dukha nichayam )

In the Ninth, loss of Righteousness ( Dharma pranasa mayan )

In the Tenth, he brings economic stringency ( Daridram )

In the Eleventh, gains of a high order ( Dhana Labham )

In the Twelfth, dissipation of wealth ( Artha Vihathim ).

Saturnine transits are dreaded and one should be very careful during the negative transits, like Elarata Saturn ( when he transits the 12th, 1st and 2nd ) and 8th.


He has a satellite called Gulika. Gulika's birth is described thus. The King
of the demons, Ravana, asked Saturn to come and stay in the 11th house, the
best house for Saturn, when his son Indrajith was born. Saturn, with his
customary guile and came and stayed in the 11th house, but put his feet in
the 12th ( the worst house for Saturn ). So Ravana got angry and cut the leg
off Saturn. That is why he is said to be lame. Indrajith was defeated when
he was born 

The Julian Calender

The Julian Calender was established by Julius Caesar on 47 BC. It used a calculation of 365.25 days or 365 day and 6 hours. So therefore it was imperative that the fourth year has an additional day, on Feb 29th.

The First Month was Ianarius or January. The second month was Februarius, named after the Goddess Februa. The third month was Martis, named after Mars, which later on became March. The fourth was Aprilis, named after the goddess, April. The fifth month was Maius, after Mercury, which later on became May. The sixth month was Iona, or June, after the Goddess Juno. The seventh was Quintilis and the eighth, Sextils. Now the next month was September. Septa in Latin is Seventh and is equivalent to the Sanskrit Sapta. October is derived from Octa, meaning 8th, Ashta. November was Nova or Nava and December was Decem or 10th or Dasa !

In 1545, the seasons went haywire. The Equinoxes, Vernal and Autumnal, all came at the wrong dates. The Western astronomers were worried and they went to Pope Gregory to rectify the Julian Calender.

The error was obvious. When I first developed my software, there was error when one year = 365.25 days was used. The actual value, given by Sir Simon Newcombe is 365.256362424815. 12 decimals have to be used. Julian Calender erred as the decimals were only 2.

The Council of Trent authorised Christopher Clavius, who knew some Astronomy and Maths, to rectify this error. He had learnt Astro Maths from Pedro Nunes, a Jewish astronomer. Matteo Ricci was sent to India for this purpose, as the Indian Jyothish texts had the sine tables of Aryabhata, Madhava and Brahmagupta. No errors were reported in Indian calculations, which are sidereal and eternal.

Pope Gregory had to add 11 more days to the Julian Calender to rectify it ! This is the Western Calender ! Western Calender is based on the Tropical Zodiac and this Zodiac precedes one degree in 72 years. This Calender needs periodic adjustment. Whereas the Indian Astro Calender is based on the non moving Sidereal Zodiac.

It is surprising that Christopher Clavius, with Indian Knowledge, rectified the Julian Calender and now this Calender is known as the Gregorian Calender. He used six decimals !
